About Kijenge
Kijenge Lutheran is a parish within the Diocese in Arusha Region of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania. It is located on the eastern edge of Arusha, a city of about 350,000 people in northeastern Tanzania. The center of the parish is located in a densely populated urban area. There are two congregations – the central one at Kijenge and a satellite one at Njiro, Arusha's most upscale suburb 3 miles south of Kijenge.
Between the two congregations, the parish has xxxx members with annual giving of $xx,xxx. Its ministries and partners include Samaritan Village orphanage, several choirs, prayer groups, fellowship groups, Sunday school, Compassion program for children, adjudication of local disputes by church elders, and others. It employs 12 parish workers, including the pastor, evangelists, Sunday school teachers, office workers, cleaners, and guards.
In July 2008, five visitors from its companion church, Salem Lutheran in Sycamore, Illinois, came to visit. They shared in a service celebrating the purchase of a vehicle for the parish. They were invited to take part in different ministries of the Lutheran church and see some of its partners. They visited Selian Lutheran Hospital in Arusha; and Samaritan Village, an orphanage for 27 children, many of whom were left for dead by their parents. From that visit, the visitors were moved to help. Hospital equipment was sent to Selian and the shiny new Arusha Lutheran Medical Centre.
